I'm a really good singer. I've gone to music camp for the last two summers and was awarded the title of best highs school tenor in the state. I also got into Northwestern University for Vocal Performance. Legit, right? Well, my best friend is also a singer. But he hasn't won anything like that. He's gone to state competitions. He's also in a band. He has a concert every weekend and he's in one of the few bands at my school. Since these "concerts" are a social thing, every one goes to them. That doesn't necessarily mean they like the bands, or their quality.
He's smart too. He's in Calculus BC with me and has taken honors classes all through high school. A bit of an underachiever, in that he doesn't do his homework consistently, but I don't do mine consistently either.
He recently told me that he's not going to college next year because he wants to try to get a music career. He says if he can get a career without a music career, why pay all that money for a music career? My confession is that I doubt he can get a music career without a degree. I feel awful, but the bitter truth is that the music industry is cut throat. I don't think he'll succeed. And when he doesn't succeed, he won't have a college degree to fall back on.
